Podikizhi Treatment in Kochi - Targeted Dry Heat Therapy for Joint Pain and Musculoskeletal Healing

Podikizhi at Nivera Ayur Care, Kochi — a classical Kerala Ayurveda therapy using herbal powder boluses to reduce pain, inflammation, stiffness, and improve mobility naturally.

What

What is PODIKIZHI?

Podikizhi is a classical Ayurvedic Sweda (sudation/fomentation) therapy in which linen pouches packed with a blend of powdered medicinal herbs are heated and applied rhythmically to specific regions of the body or the entire body.

Unlike Njavarakizhi — which uses moist heat and nourishing action — Podikizhi delivers dry therapeutic heat that penetrates deeply into the tissues. This dry heat is particularly effective for conditions involving Ama (accumulated metabolic toxins) in the joints and soft tissues, Kapha-dominant conditions with heaviness and swelling, and Vata-Kapha conditions with stiffness and pain.

The herbal powders used in Podikizhi are specifically selected for their Deepana (digestive), Pachana (metabolic-stimulating), Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), and Vatakaphahara (Vata and Kapha-reducing) properties — making the therapy both locally and systemically therapeutic.

How the Therapy is Done (Procedure)

  • Step 1

The herbal powder blend — selected specifically for the patient's condition — is prepared and divided into portions.

  • Step 2

Each portion is placed at the centre of a square of linen cloth and tied tightly to form a firm bolus pouch of approximately fist size.

  • Step 3

The bolus pouches are heated in a dry pan or in warm medicated oil, depending on the protocol prescribed (Valuka Sweda or direct dry heat application).

  • Step 4

The patient lies on the therapy table. After an initial oil application to the treatment area, the heated boluses are applied in a rhythmic, coordinated manner — patting, pressing, and circular strokes across the affected regions.

  • Step 5

The therapist maintains constant awareness of the bolus temperature — alternating between active and resting boluses to maintain optimal therapeutic heat throughout.

  • Step 6

After the full treatment area has been covered, the residual herbal powder that has transferred to the skin is gently massaged in before the patient showers.

  • Step 7

Post-treatment rest of 15 to 30 minutes is recommended before bathing.

Our approach is simple:

Assess properly. Plan carefully. Support patiently.

Preparations Used

While Podikizhi is primarily a dry heat therapy, a thin application of appropriate medicated oil is made to the skin before the bolus application — this protects the skin from excessive heat and facilitates the penetration of herbal actives. Common oils used include Sahacharadi Taila and Kottamchukkadi Taila.

Duration & Course Details

Single session: 45 to 60 minutes (including preparatory massage)

Standard course: 7 consecutive days

For chronic arthritis or degenerative conditions: 14 to 21 days

May be alternated with Njavarakizhi in combined kizhi protocols

Frequently Asked Questions

When administered by a trained therapist, Podikizhi produces a therapeutic warmth that is deeply penetrating but not painful or burning. The therapist constantly monitors the bolus temperature and the patient’s comfort. Any discomfort is immediately addressed by adjusting the temperature or technique.

Yes, with important considerations. In the acute inflammatory phase of rheumatoid arthritis (with hot, swollen joints), dry heat therapies like Podikizhi require careful prescription and monitoring. In subacute and chronic phases, Podikizhi is highly effective for reducing stiffness, improving mobility, and breaking down Ama deposits. Our physician assesses the disease phase before prescribing.

Podikizhi uses dry herbal powder with dry heat — it reduces inflammation, dissolves Ama, and is ideal for Kapha-Vata joint conditions. Njavarakizhi uses moist Njavara rice with medicated milk — it nourishes, strengthens, and rebuilds tissue, ideal for weakness and muscle wasting. They address different clinical needs and may be combined strategically.

Yes — Podikizhi is one of the most effective therapies for cervical and lumbar spondylosis, applied carefully along the spinal musculature. The therapy reduces inflammation, relieves stiffness, and improves vertebral mobility. Precise technique and appropriate pressure are essential, which is why this must always be performed by a trained therapist.

Many patients with arthritis and joint conditions notice a meaningful reduction in morning stiffness and pain within 3 to 5 sessions. Significant, lasting improvements in joint mobility and pain levels are typically evident after a full 7 to 14-day course.
