In a world of relentless overstimulation, the nervous system rarely gets to rest. Shirodhara — one of the most celebrated and distinctive therapies of classical Kerala Ayurveda — offers that rest in the most profound way. At Nivera Ayur Care, Kochi, our Shirodhara treatment is administered by trained therapists under physician supervision, in an environment designed to help you surrender fully to the healing process
Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic external therapy in which a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm medicated liquid — most commonly medicated oil, though milk, buttermilk, or herbal decoction may be used depending on the condition — is poured steadily onto the Ajna Marma, the point at the centre of the forehead.
The word Shirodhara is derived from two Sanskrit roots: Shiro (head) and Dhara (flow or stream). The therapy directly acts on the central nervous system through the network of nerve endings concentrated at the forehead and scalp, inducing a state of deep neurological calm that is unique to this treatment.
In Ayurvedic classical texts including the Ashtanga Hridayam, Shirodhara is described as a primary treatment for conditions rooted in Vata and Pitta aggravation affecting the mind and nervous system. It is one of the Murdha Taila (head oil therapies) — a group of treatments held in the highest regard for neurological and psychological conditions.

The patient lies comfortably on a traditional wooden therapy table (droni), eyes covered with a soft cloth for protection.
A pre-treatment Abhyanga (head and body oil massage) is administered to prepare the nervous system and open the body's channels.
A specially crafted Shirodhara vessel (a brass or clay pot with a small opening at the base) is suspended above the forehead at a precisely calibrated height.
Warm medicated oil — heated to a carefully measured temperature — is poured into the vessel. A controlled, continuous stream flows through the opening and falls in a steady rhythm onto the centre of the forehead.
The therapist ensures that the stream covers the entire forehead in a gentle, pendulum-like motion — from temple to temple — creating a deeply meditative, uninterrupted sensory experience.
Duration of the stream is maintained for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the condition and the physician's prescription.
After the Dhara, the oil is gently massaged into the scalp. The patient rests for a period before being guided to wash and recover.
Assess properly. Plan carefully. Support patiently.
The choice of medicated oil is critical and individualised. Common oils include Dhanwantaram Taila (for Vata-related neurological conditions), Ksheerabala Taila (for pain and nervous system support), Brahmi Taila (for cognitive and psychological conditions), and Chandanadi Taila (for Pitta-dominant conditions with heat and inflammation). For certain conditions, medicated milk (Ksheeradhara) or medicated buttermilk (Takradhara) may be prescribed.
Single session: 45 to 60 minutes (including preparatory massage)
Standard course: 7 consecutive days
Therapeutic course for neurological conditions: 14 to 21 consecutive days
Maintenance programme: Monthly or seasonal sessions recommended post-treatment
Not at all. Shirodhara is one of the most deeply relaxing experiences in Ayurveda. Most patients enter a meditative or sleep-like state within minutes of the oil stream beginning. The warmth and rhythm of the flow are inherently calming. Some patients report feeling the most profound relaxation of their lives during treatment.
For therapeutic purposes, yes — Shirodhara is most effective when administered in consecutive daily sessions as prescribed by a physician. The cumulative neurological effect of repeated sessions is far greater than occasional treatments. After a therapeutic course, periodic maintenance sessions are recommended.
The oil is selected individually by our physician based on your constitution (prakriti), current imbalance (vikriti), and the condition being treated. We use classically prepared medicated oils — not cosmetic or fragrance oils — ensuring full therapeutic potency.
Shirodhara is contraindicated during fever, acute infections, open wounds on the scalp, severe cervical spondylosis with instability, and in the third trimester of pregnancy. Our physicians conduct a full assessment before prescribing Shirodhara to ensure it is safe and appropriate for each patient.
Many patients notice an immediate improvement in sleep quality on the night of their first session. Stress reduction and mental clarity typically improve progressively over the course of a 7-day treatment. For chronic neurological conditions, meaningful improvement is usually evident after a 14 to 21-day course.
